Flashback Friday - The True Story of Hansel and Gretel - Scene 3

Here is the next scene! If you missed them, be sure to go read scenes 1 and 2 before continuing.

 Scene 3

(Hansel and Gretel go to greet their father who is standing outside their home.)

GRETEL
Guten tag, Vater.

HANSEL
Yes, good day, Father.

HOLTZMANN
Hello, children. (Gives them each a hug.) How was school today?

HANSEL
It was good. We learned that Freiberg is “The Jewel of the Black Forest”.

HOLTZMANN
(Proudly.) Yes, it is. And what did you learn, Gretel?

GRETEL
Oskar told us a story about an old hag that lives in the heart of the Black Forest and how a little boy disappeared.

HOLTZMANN
Now, now, children. We mustn’t listen to every story we are told. That’s all they are, just stories. No children have disappeared in the woods.

GRETEL
 (Uneasy.) Are you sure?

HOLTZMANN
(Kneels down in front of her and gives her another hug.) Of course, my little Gretel. (Stands up.) Come, children, we must gather wood. There will be a storm soon and we must gather enough wood to last us until the forest dries out. If it is anything like the last one…(His voice trails off as he disappears into the woods)

(Hansel and Gretel come to the front of the stage as the curtain closes behind them.)

HANSEL
So far, nothing’s too different from the story that you know, right?

AUDIENCE
Right.

GRETEL
This is where we start to see the differences between what is real and what is made up. (Exits.)

HANSEL
(Secretively.) You see, I knew that Gretel had been really bothered by the story that Oskar told. After several days, I decided to scare my sister. We went for a walk in the woods to see if the wood was dry enough after the storm for us to collect, but I was there for another reason.

(Curtain rises.)
